April 26, 2017: After leaving the ATC trailer factory in Nappanee, IN, the first place we took our new toy hauler was Love’s Travel Stop in Gary, IN. We needed to fill the two propane tanks.
We didn’t realize Gary, IN was the murder capital of the United States. We only came here because we were told the Cabela’s, in nearby Hammond, offered free overnight RV parking. Had Cabela’s offered propane tank fill-ups, we’d have never bothered to come to Love’s Travel Stop.

The phone at the propane tank station wasn’t working. So, Sash walked into the store to let them know.
“I’ll send someone out there”, the big black lady said.
And so we waited. And waited, and waited.
About 30 minutes later, I walked back into the store to inquire.
“You mean he ain’t been out?” the big black lady asked.
“No”, I answered.
She picked up a phone and spoke into it. Then she hung up.
“He said he looked and there was no one out there!”
I looked dumbfounded. What could I say?
“Alright, I’ll send him out again!”
I walked back out there. And finally, this really heavy set black guy comes out with a angry look on his face, as if I just bothered his game of GTA 5. He filled up the tanks and handed them back.
“I’ll see you inside!” he said in his deepest Barry White voice.
I followed him, and paid my bill. The looks they gave made me feel so unwelcome.
And here I thought I was the customer.
